What's the difference between sound and noise?

What’s the difference between sound and noise?

Very simply, sound is a vibration of energy through acoustic waves that can be heard and felt. Noise, on the other hand, is unwanted sound. It can cause disruption, annoyance, distraction and in some cases, pain or other audial issues.

When we think about communication and culture, sounds are necessary to engage. (This is with the exception for deaf/mutism.) Sound transmits a message that is heard audibly from a sender to a receiver. The way in which one speaks can be perceived non verbally, including tone, pitch, spatial distance and loudness.

Noise, too, is part of the communication model. Noise is wedged in between every action from sender to receiver; as stated above, this can disrupt a message.

Have you used sound and noise interchangeably? (I know I have before! 🤦🏻‍♀️)
