What’s the connection between culture and identity?

There are a few schools of thought on this. Overall, culture ties our identity to a group. When we communicate, we are not only speaking to ourselves (with our culture[s] self-identified), we are also speaking as part of a cluster of identities that form in a culture or cultures.

For example, Person X will identify from a specific country, as a native speaker of a certain language, with a chosen belief system, etc., and Person X will be communicating knowing (perhaps intentional or not) that they are representing these cultures, and the recipient of these messages will understand those contexts as also being cultural (i.e. Person X has an accent like others from that country, etc.).

Looking at today’s global landscape, people can communicate with each other in different physical locations. Technology has changed what was once considered traditional societies. While there are vast differences that can still be found, such as financial disparities or language barriers, it’s no longer the case to only socialize within a small spatial space. With that said, the opportunity to communicate with other individuals with different cultural contexts- with the potential to garner effective feedback.
